It is important to remember that contact lenses are medical devices that sit on your eye. First our Optometrists check if your eyes are healthy enough to tolerate a contact lens by looking for conditions like dry eye, allergies and the effects of your environment on your eyes. If you are a good candidate for contact lens wear, a specific prescription that is different from your glasses prescription is required. Each eye is corrected individually and a contact lens prescription is created to enhance vision at all distances. Since the contact lens sits on your eye, measurements of the corneal curvature are taken using a Keratometer to determine the size of the contact lens that will be needed to fit onto your eye. A trial lens will then be chosen and placed on your eye. The doctor will look at how well the lens centres on your cornea, how it moves when you blink, how the lens responds to eye movements and how well the tears get replaced with each blink. After wearing a contact lens for a while, the fitting characteristics and vision can change, so it needs to be assessed again after sitting on your eyes for a period of time. You will be given a set of trial lenses to take home and wear in your daily environment, so you can test out how the lenses perform with your lifestyle. When you come back for your follow up the eye doctor will determine if the contact lens provides visual clarity, comfort and if it is a healthy fit. Your Optometrist will finalize the contact lens prescription based on your feedback.
